Our Team Picks: Favourite Family and Motherhood Movies

This month we wanted to take a look at films that celebrate the beauty of motherhood, not only because in March we have been reflecting on family and loved ones but also because Mothers Day took place earlier this month. We asked some of our team what their favourite films about mothers and family are.

Dóra Engelleiter - Head of Marketing

One of my favourite films about family and motherhood is Brave. I love that even though it’s an animated film, it feels very real when it comes to the relationship between Merida and her mum.

Their dynamic is something I think a lot of people can relate to, there’s love, but also tension, misunderstandings, and that push for independence. Merida wants to follow her own path, while her mother is trying to guide her based on what she thinks is best. Neither of them is wrong, which is what makes it so honest.

One of my favourite parts is when everything kind of spirals and they’re forced to actually listen to each other. It’s not dramatic in a big, over-the-top way, but it hits emotionally. You really see how much they care, even when they struggle to show it.

What I like most about Brave is that it doesn’t try to make motherhood look perfect. It shows that relationships can be messy, but that doesn’t make them any less strong. If anything, it’s those difficult moments that bring people closer in the end.

Siobhan Carson- Event Manager

The theme of ‘Motherhood ’ is perfect for encapsulating the story which is told throughout the musical classic of Mamma Mia!

Not only is it a cult classic for musical lovers, but it’s also one of those films you can watch time and time again. I personally adore this film, as I remember listening to the CD in the car with my mother belting out every song. Our favourite was ‘Money, Money, Money’.

The film as most people know conveys the story of Sophie who before her wedding sets out to find who her father is by inviting 3 men from her mother’s past. As I also grew up with a single mother I understood the longing to reconnect with a father, However I also understand the sacrifices and the love that my mother gave for me to be who I am today.

The story is a fun and highly entertaining portrayal of what it means to both be a daughter and a mother and what it is just to be a girl.
