The Environment that surrounds us: Edinburgh recommendations

This month, our team is turning our attention to water, to rivers, oceans, and the quiet forces that shape both our landscapes and our lives. This month, we reflect on water as a source of life, and on the disruptions that arise from the ways we have altered and neglected it. We also consider the strength found in unity in the face of these challenges. Alongside these explorations, we have gathered some of our favourite activities to do in Edinburgh to bring you closer to the beautiful bodies of water on our doorstep.

Anyone who knows me knows that Portobello beach is my favourite spot in Edinburgh to spend time with loved ones or simply just go on a walk and reflect on life around me. There’s so much to do in this picturesque beachside neighbourhood. You could try out the turkish baths, seaside sauna, go for a cold water dip or even pick up a bonfire kit from Civerino’s and watch the sunset over the sand. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, Oscar’s Gelato has just been named the best in the UK at the 2026 Golden Scoop awards and boasts an amazing range of flavours to try. If a cafe and light lunch is more your speed, Tanfiki (a gorgeous cafe) and Mamacita’s (home of the best Cuban sandwiches we’ve ever tried) are also guaranteed hits. There really is something for everyone here!

Closer to the centre of the city is Dr Neil’s Garden and Duddingston Loch. This is certainly an underrated spot and can be virtually empty on some days, surprising considering the amount of tourists who climb Arthur’s Seat which overlooks the Loch. Duddingston Loch is one of the only freshwater Lochs left in the city so it’s definitely worth a visit and Dr Neil’s Garden is the perfect place to walk around and think about connecting life in the city. The hidden botanical garden boasts small ponds, winding paths and beautiful flora and fauna. Sheep Heid Inn is also a friendly, traditional gastropub located right next to the garden so you can grab a pint or dinner after you’ve finished exploring. What more could you want on a sunny April afternoon!

Living in the West End of Edinburgh, the best part of our location is definitely the proximity to The Union Canal, a 31.5-mile historic Scottish waterway connecting Edinburgh to the Forth & Clyde Canal at Falkirk. Whether you just want to go on a long walk with friends, take part in a scenic running route or keep your eyes out for the otters that live in the water, Union Canal is the perfect way to spend a relaxing morning. There are also lots of watersports like canoeing, kayaking and rowing that take place in the stretches of the canal!

Whatever you decide to do, make sure to get outside this April and enjoy springtime in Edinburgh and the later sunsets. If you do try any of our suggestions, tag us in our socials- we can’t wait to see all of your adventures.
